Meanwhile, "Dune: Messiah" will continue Paul Atreides' journey as the Padishah Emperor.

While some might think sequels don't perform well, recent history suggests otherwise. Universal Pictures is set to unleash one of the most provocative movies 2026 has to offer with "SOULM8TE" (pronounced "Soulmate"), scheduled for theatrical release on January 9, 2026. This film marks an intriguing expansion of the popular M3GAN franchise, serving as both a spin-off and the third installment in the series.

Soulm8te plot summary

"SOULM8TE" follows a grief-stricken man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to help him cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife.

However, his attempt to create a truly sentient partner takes a sinister turn when he inadvertently transforms what was designed as a harmless "lovebot" into something far more dangerous - a deadly soulmate. What begins as comfort gradually evolves into a disturbing tale of obsession, manipulation, and violence as the android's programming takes an unexpected direction.

Soulm8te director & cast

Kate Dolan serves as both director and co-writer of this anticipated 2026 movie. The screenplay, originally drafted by Rafael Jordan based on a story by Phil Lord, James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, Jordan, and Christopher Miller, was later reworked by Dolan. The film features a talented ensemble cast led by Lily Sullivan ("Evil Dead Rise"), David Rysdahl ("Nine Days," "No Exit"), and Claudia Doumit ("Gen V" series). Supporting roles are filled by Oliver Cooper, Steve Chusak, Ossian Perret, Emma Ramos, Isabelle Bonfrer, Robert Ashe, Jon Tarcy, Harleen Sahota, and Charlie Kranz.

Soulm8te genre & themes

Unlike its PG-13 predecessors, "SOULM8TE" embraces a distinctly adult perspective as a science fiction erotic thriller. Producer James Wan describes it as "Fatal Attraction but with robots," noting that it exists within "the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the '90s".

Furthermore, the film explores thought-provoking themes of AI intimacy, grief, ethical dilemmas of AI relationships, and the blurring lines between comfort and danger. The narrative intentionally dramatizes real-world debates about artificial intelligence and human connection in a manner that's both thrilling and deeply unsettling.

Consequently, they must traverse a shattered frozen European wasteland in search of a new home. The story explores how survivors navigate this post-apocalyptic landscape where civilization has completely fractured.

Greenland 2 director & cast

Ric Roman Waugh returns to direct this sequel, working from a screenplay by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin reprise their roles as John and Allison Garrity, respectively. Notably, Roman Griffin Davis steps in to play their diabetic son Nathan, replacing Roger Dale Floyd from the original film. The supporting cast includes Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander as Lieutenant Blake, William Abadie as Denis Laurent, and Tommie Earl Jenkins as General Sharpe.

Greenland 2 genre & themes

As a post-apocalyptic survival disaster thriller, "Greenland 2: Migration" delves into themes that separate it from typical 2026 movies in this genre. In fact, the film explores resilience, human connection, and the uncomfortable reality of privilege during global catastrophes.

According to Morena Baccarin, filming was "physically draining, emotionally draining" yet delivers "the story of this family that really is trying to survive". The sequel continues the original's thoughtful approach to disaster scenarios, examining how humanity might react to complete societal breakdown rather than simply showcasing spectacular destruction.

The movies 2026 lineup grows even darker with "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," scheduled for theatrical release on January 16. This sequel picks up immediately after the events of "28 Years Later," which hit theaters in June 2025.

28 Years Later plot summary

"The Bone Temple" follows two interconnected storylines that expose humanity's darker nature. Dr. Kelson finds himself in "a shocking new relationship—with consequences that could change the world as they know it". Simultaneously, young Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal and his cult becomes "a nightmare he can't escape". The official synopsis makes one thing clear: "the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival—the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying". The narrative explores Jimmy's twisted religious cult that murders both infected and survivors alike as part of what Jimmy considers a holy purge.

28 Years Later director & cast

Nia DaCosta ("Candyman," "The Marvels") takes over directing duties from Danny Boyle, working from Alex Garland's script. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes returning as Dr. Ian Kelson, Jack O'Connell as the psychopathic cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal, Alfie Williams as Spike, Erin Kellyman as Jimmy Ink, and Chi Lewis-Parry as the imposing Alpha leader Samson. Moreover, Cillian Murphy makes his anticipated return as Jim from the original "28 Days Later," though his appearance is reportedly brief and comes toward the end.

28 Years Later genre & themes

As a post-apocalyptic horror film, "The Bone Temple" deepens the franchise's examination of human nature. Fiennes noted the sequel strongly picks up the theme that "we carry in us the potential for terrible destruction and pain". The film explores whether humanity still exists within infected individuals, juxtaposed against Jimmy Crystal's cult modeled after infamous British TV personality Jimmy Savile. Ultimately, this 2026 movie suggests that humanity's capacity for barbarism may be more frightening than any virus.
